Keiko and Tomimo were perfect hosts. The made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Tomimo drove us to the Snow Monkey park, and the food was delicious.
The warm welcome and making guest comfortable deserves a six star rating. Keiko was a great host. She made extra effort to fetch us from the train station, drive us to an apple orchard and to the snow monkey hill. The food is delicious both dinner and breakfast. Keiko even helped me seek information for my next destination on the japanese website. The room is spacious. Keiko and husband are excellent host. Thank you for the memorable stay.
The washing basin in the room does not comes with hot water. Pretty cold to use even during the autumn months.
Very friendly and accommodating host. Great food. Excellent value for money!
Our room was a bit worn, but comfortable nevertheless.
Beautiful spacious rooms in the heart of this spa area. Guests had complementary access to about a dozen spas located around this small town. The owners were friendly, welcoming and helpful. Also provided complementary robes for the spas and WiFi.
Keiko and her husband were fabulous! They picked us up and dropped us back at the station, drive us to the convenience store and to the monkey park. They even lent us their snow boots!! They were fantastic!!!!
No wifi in our room so we had to sit outside our door which was quite cold...
Lovely old family run place. House is original wooden samurai house, preserves architectural integrity
Having a Ryokan experience with great hospitality from the hosts.
Shared toilets. A little noisy and smokey from other guests.
We felt warmly welcomed from the moment we arrived in Yamanouchi. The visitor waiting area at the train station is staffed by volunteers from a local english class so they can practice their conversation skills and the man we spoke to was so friendly, helpful and gracious. The service Keiko and her husband provide at the Shenshinkan Matsuya is wonderful - we only had 1 night in the village but felt like we were able to get the most out of our short visit from their help with what to do, where to eat and how to get around. Shibu Onsen is such an enchanting traditional village and the locals we met (ramen house, sushi bar and bean cake shop) were all such lovely people who were so proud of their town.
Loved the quaint street the hotel was on and the lovely hospitality. Plus the owner gave us a lift to see the snow monkeys and gave us a really good introduction to the restaurants and hot spring baths in the area.
Senshinkan Matsuya is a lovely traditional hotel right in the heart of Shibu Onsen. It is fantastic to stay in the village itself as you get your own key to access the various baths dotted along the main cobblestoned street, however we actually found that the bath in Senshinkan Matsuya was one of the nicest that we visited. If you get a chance, definitely eat a meal or two at Matsuya itself - we were being a little careful with money so we only had one dinner there but in retrospect I wish we'd eaten there more as the dinner we did have was a delicious feast of traditional Japanese dishes, all beautifully presented (and more than worth the cost). The owners, Keiko and her husband, are both lovely hosts and they were very helpful, giving us lifts to the monkey park and the train station. We would definitely recommend Senshinkan Matsuya to any travellers looking for a short relaxing break.
Wonderful hosts. We were picked up from the train station. They also dropped us off at the snow monkey park entrance. The place is in the old area so is in the middle of the Onsen area. Had fun going around them at night. The evening meal and breakfast was amazing. It was a great traditional Japanese experience.
The futon bed was a bit hard but we expected that.
I liked the food, the location and the good service. Also the Japanese experience.
Matsuya is located in a good area of the village :) The place is clean and the facilities is great. Definitely a good place for a breakaway vacation, however nothing special to be impress in personal, nothing like other feedback or comments, no special touch or others.
Matsuya is not allow for earlier check in , at 3 pm while check out is 10am (5 hours gap!!) even there are alot of vacant room, as they want to keep the area free for cleaning. We didn't get pick up from train station as they said they will only pick up and drop off at their specific time!!! The room was so cold! No proper heater or table heater blanket.. We had to sleep cold all night. Again very restrict for private bath use because timing. My liking for this hotel is less when compare to a experience I had with one of the hotel in yudanaka where there even have snow boots for guests to use on the heavy snow day! They didnt understand customers as individual and etc!!! Don't expect too much from Matsuya because they got rate 9.4, as the reality, they probably much lower than that!
This Ryokan was so wonderful. The couple who owned the place were super lovely, friendly and very helpful. When we arrived, they picked us up from the train station, gave us some hot tea and provided us with plenty of maps and explanations about the town. They also dropped us at the monkey park entrance the next day and organised for us to pick our luggage up later as we were only staying one night. The place was a beautiful old building in a gorgeous little town. It was snowing when we arrived which made it all the more magical. I highly recommend this Ryokan to anybody wanting to experience the more traditional side of Japan. It was highly affordable and had such a lovely homely feeling. There was also free wifi which didn't require a LAN cable, which for us having a tablet and not a laptop was great. All in all, if you're not sure, do it.
Tomi & Keiko were lovely hosts - genuinely kind and friendly and committed to offering customer service. Keiko was watching the monkey spa on webcam, and drove us to the monkey park as soon as they arrived to bathe in the morning so we could see them before the crowds arrived, which was great. Their restaurant map/ guide of the town was really helpful too!
We booked and stayed for two nights, but if you're only going to Yamanouchi to see the monkeys, then really, one night would suffice! We thought we'd get into the whole onsen scene, but they were A.) really uncomfortably hot and B.) full of naked old people! We discovered communal bathing was not really our caper! There's not a lot else to do in town.
